Volunteer Directives

Thank you for taking an interest in volunteering for DFW Atheists Helping the Homeless. Volunteers are the backbone of our charity and your time is greatly appreciated. We appreciate when volunteers bring items to giveaway, but it certainly is not required of you. We will take roll of the volunteers, but will not breech your privacy. Should you need a letter stating the hours volunteered, we would be more than pleased to provide that to you.

Fort Worth giveaways are held on the first Sunday of each month and Dallas giveaways are held on the third Sunday of each month. Giveaways start at noon and last approximately two hours. We hand out toiletries, clothing and other items to the homeless. We provide plastic grocery bags and allow people to take the items they need.

Being an atheist group in the Bible belt, we will be subject to extra scrutiny. That being said, we request that no volunteers bring or consume alcoholic beverages during a giveaway. We also request that no volunteer wear any clothing that is…

There is a distinct possibility that someone may want to discuss religion with you. While a brief discussion of their and your [non]beliefs is acceptable, we request that everyone refrain from debating or criticizing theists’ religious views. If you don’t feel comfortable discussing religion or you feel unable to remain civil, please inform them that you are just here to help.

Below is a list of some items that we like to provide on a regular basis. Travel sized items are preferred as many homeless persons do not have a place to keep their belongings and lighter items are easier to carry… Things we are always looking to obtain are: backpacks, cots/chairs in over the shoulder bag, one man tents, and umbrellas.
